No More "Sinner's Prayer" Please!

Sad Story: One day while Jesus was walking down the road, a young man asked him..."Sir what must I do to be saved?" Jesus replied, "the time is near and the kingdom is at hand, now repeat these words after me..."

A well-meaning sister from a local church came to my house one day. As my brother opened the door, she began to speak to him about Jesus. Imagine my joy, as I thought "the gospel is the power of God unto salvation! Oh that he'd listen and God would open his heart to believe" (Acts 16:14)! As I prayed while this woman talked to my brother about Jesus, she began to ask him a question. "Barry," she said, "would you like to give your heart to Jesus?" "Sure." He replied. "Repeat after me then. Dear God, I am a sinner. I know that Jesus died for my sins, and I believe in him. Please come into my heart and save me." "Oh no!" I thought. Still, God is sovereign, and he saves people apart from theological understanding so long as they repent and trust in Jesus. Knowing this, therefore, I kept on praying. Barry then finished echoing the woman's prayer, and she began to declare him "a child of God." After their talk, I thanked the woman for coming and Barry closed the door. It's been weeks since that occurrence and there has been no change in my brother. Worse of all, now he has a false assurance that because he said a prayer asking Jesus to come into his heart, he is saved. Why do we use this in our evangelism? Oh God, bring us to an understanding of your word! That we would echo the disciples and great saints of history by commanding men everywhere to repent and believe the gospel. My Zimbio
