Bible Study pt 10

I had looked forward to this Monday's study, and I was in no way disappointed. First of all, we had a very large group. Secondly, our speaker for this week, Chris, expounded on the Gospel. The gospel is so amazing to me! No wonder scriptures declares that "even angels long to look into it" (1 Peter 1:12). Chris asked a very important question during our study of the gospel, namely "how can a Holy, Righteous, and Just God, forgive wicked men and still remain just?" The answer is beautiful.

"But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus." - Romans 3:21-26

Jesus' death served two purposes: First, He died to show the righteousness of God. God being Holy, Righteous, and Just, cannot excuse sin. Indeed, He will not. Therefore, someone had to die. As it is written..."The soul that sins will die." When Christ died - not as a sinner, but for sinners - his death served as a substitutionary sacrifice for sinners. Secondly, Christ died to save sinners from God. God being as Holy as He is, will punish all those who delights in breaking His laws. Christ died to show the mercy of God, insomuch as to offer sinners a pardon from God's wrath. Now, therefore, for all those who trust in Christ for their justification (and they trust in Christ as apposed to themselves because they realize that Christ lived a perfect life and they lived as enemies to God by breaking his laws and delighting in sin), there will be no condemnation (Romans 8:1). As the scriptures testify..."For our sake he [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor 5:21).
